Summary of Position
Are you seeking a role where your exceptional communication skills will support climate change, food safety, and environmental justice programs across the Commonwealth? We are seeking an organized, diplomatic and detail-oriented professional to join the Bureau of Climate and Environmental Health (BCEH) at the Department of Public Health(DPH). The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about the social determinants of health, and share a dedicated commitment to health equity, particularly racial equity, and environmental justice. Most importantly, the Environmental Health Communications Manager (Communications Manager) will ensure thoughtful, inclusive, innovative, and consistent messaging, developed through a racial equity lens.
The Communications Manager plays a key role in developing and maintaining the overall communications plan for BCEH which is a critical component to the long-term success of this important climate work. Reporting to the Manager of Strategic Climate and Environmental Health Initiatives, the Communications Manager works across the seven BCEH Programs to develop a consistent communications strategy to include uniform messaging, presentation, and outreach in alignment with BCEH priorities and to DPH policies and procedures. The Communications Manager is responsible for coordinating content for external and internal communication, presentations, working on media campaigns, website content, responses to press inquiries, and for communication and training materials to support various initiatives across BCEH, with a particular focus on climate change and environmental justice.
The BCEH works to protect communities, especially the most vulnerable, from the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards, which result in significant health disparities. The Bureau is committed to the principle of environmental justice that all people have a right to be protected from environmental pollution and other contaminants and safety concerns, and to live in and enjoy a clean and healthful environment.
Preferred Qualifications
The demands on this position will be significant and will require exceptional inter-personal skills, organization, written and oral communication skills and diplomacy.
- At least 4 years of experience in business management, public administration, or a related field.
- Understanding of principals of health communications including identification of target audiences and understanding of literacy levels, linguistic and cultural access and earned media.
- Experience working in public health/government managing communications.
- Experience developing diverse communications and resources, such as: annual communications plans, annual reports, guidance/operating procedures manuals, organizational processes/procedures, training curricula, website content, social media posts, newsletters, press releases, talking points, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
- Able to draft, edit, and review materials accurately and succinctly, while working in a fast-paced and evolving environment with a high level of scrutiny.
- Exceptional presentation, research, time-management and written/verbal communication skills.
- Expertise and experience developing, leading, and executing strategic communication plans; demonstrated ability to assess complex situations, diagnose problems and plan effective communication strategies and actions.
