Title: Health Equity Communications Manager
Organization: Massachusetts Department of Public Health
Summary of Position
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and dedicated professional to join the Community Engagement Unit (CEU) within the Office of Health Equity (OHE). The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, adept at managing competing priorities and passionate about embedding racial equity into all components of communications processes.
The mission of DPH is to prevent illness, injury, and premature death, to assure access to high quality public health and health care services, and to promote wellness and health equity for all people in the Commonwealth. This position plays a key role in promoting health equity at DPH. The Health Equity Communications Manager reports to the Deputy Director of the CEU. The CEU was developed in 2021 to better identify, assess and respond to the myriad health disparities identified across the state, as a result of the COVID19 pandemic. The CEU is charged with providing community engagement programming, services and initiatives with measurable outcomes that support the goal of eliminating health disparities across the Commonwealth. The priority communities receiving intentional support in this effort include Black/African American; Latino; Asian American & Pacific Islander; Tribal and Indigenous Peoples; Immigrants and Refugees; and LGBTQ+ communities. The Manager will oversee office communications to ensure initiatives are engaging internal and external partners appropriately in this work.
Working in close collaboration with the DPH Communications Office and Commissioner’s Office, the Manager assures that all communication strategies and initiatives are aligned with the priorities of the Department, as well as OHE goals and priorities. The Manager serves as a liaison between CEU, OHE and with the DPH Communications Office to ensure thoughtful, inclusive, innovative, appropriate, and consistent messaging, developed through a racial equity lens.
Fundamental to this work is developing a health equity approach to all communications—ensuring health communications and initiatives are grounded in equity and informed by the communities most impacted. This includes working with community partners to identify priorities and strategies, including the need to build community awareness and acceptance before communication materials are developed and released. In addition, the Manager ensures all materials and strategies align with Department goals and priorities and adhere to DPH policies, procedures and approval processes.
