The Communications and Development Manager is a new position and will be a core part of the MPHA Team focusing on assuring that MPHA has the resources to pursue its mission and that our messaging and materials emerge from our values and engage a wide range of stakeholders.  The selected candidate will be committed to our mission and excited to engage donors and stakeholders in our work.  

The position is based in our downtown Boston office and reports to the Executive Director. This is a full time (~40 hour per week) position.  Occasional early morning or evening hours may be required.

Brief Summary of Position

The Communications and Development Manager is a new position on the MPHA team.  This manager reports to the Executive Director and will be responsible for the development and implementation of annual communications and fundraising plansThe manager will supervise part time consultants related to events coordination and communications.  S/He will manage and oversee MPHA’s signature annual events (the Spring Awards Breakfast and the Fall Annual Conference & Expo) as well as assist in growing MPHA’s organizational membership and individual donor supportThe manager will be responsible for ensuring consistency of messaging and branding across all communications vehicles, managing or supporting communications for external audiences, and developing content for newsletters, digital media, event related materials, etc.  

Specific Responsibilities

Development 

  • Develop and implement strategies to engage corporate donors, individual donors, and organizational members. 
  • Staff the Board Development Committee, which helps create and execute the annual development plan. 
  • Create an annual development calendar (based on the development plan) inclusive of tactics, actions and benchmarks. 
  • Refine and enhance the MPHA organizational membership program including member identification, cultivation and engagement.   
  • Oversight of two major annual events (Spring Awards Breakfast & Annual Conference in the fall).

 -Work with the Operations Associate on day-to-day activities        related to: coordination with venues; coordination with awardees and/or speakers; coordination with volunteers; preparation of materials; solicitation of sponsorships; ticket sales. 

          -Supervision of events coordination consultant. 

  • Oversee Annual Appeal including drafting of letters and call scripts, matching board members to donor lists, arranging phone banking events, communicating with Board members and supporting them in making their calls, etc. 
  • Develop and manage a stakeholder cultivation calendar for ED and Board (for members, sponsors, and other donors).  This should include visits with stakeholders, calls, and appeal letters.  Represent MPHA to potential donors as needed. 
  • Maintain the donor database and implement best practices for donor management.  
  • Design and host potential donor cultivation events. 
  • Work with Director of Operations to monitor revenue against the development plan/calendar.  

Communications

  • Working with the ED and staff, develop a communications strategy and accompanying plan. 
  • Create an annual communications calendar inclusive of tactics, actions and benchmarks. 
  • In coordination with appropriate staff (and communications consultant), develop content for newsletters, blogs, social media, appeals, event related materials, membership materials, etc. 
  • Management of a potential communications consultant, prioritizing assignments in order to optimize limited availability. 
  • Preparation of MPHA’s Annual Report and coordination with communications vendor for final production and web posting. 
  • Monitor social media analytics, share with staff and develop responsive actions as needed. 
  • Review and develop a plan to update and maintain the website and provide project management to implement in coordination with the Director of Operations. 
  • Collaborate with the Policy and Field Team to assure that communications reflect program priorities. 

Other

  • Participation in staff meetings. 
  • Occasional presentations or public speaking. 

Qualifications and Experience

Communications Skills

  • Exceptional English written and verbal communications skills, including editing and proofreading. (Final candidates will be asked for a writing sample. 
  • Ability to flex communication style for different audiences and environments.  
  • Skilled in use of technology for creating written documents and presentations and in using databases and multiple social media platforms (e.g. Microsoft Office, Salesforce, Click & Pledge, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all a plus). 

Project and Time Management

  • Experience in project management, developing action plans and tracking progress. 
  • Demonstrated experience in taking ownership of projects and leadership in driving work forward.  
  • Exceptionally organized with strong attention to detail.  
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking capabilities and ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to challenges with judgement and responsive planning. 

Occasional in-state travel is necessary. Availability for occasional early morning, evening, or weekend events and meetings is required. 

 Salary range: $55-65,000, depending upon experience. Excellent health, dental and paid time off benefits.
