Brief Summary of Position:

The Vice President is a senior-level position who will provide vision and leadership to the organization’s grantmaking services. They will also partner and collaborate with other Vice Presidents and senior staff to provide overall organization leadership and strategic direction. The Vice President will cultivate trusting and long-term relationships with key stakeholders in the philanthropic, public sector, business, and medical communities. The Vice President will be strategic, entrepreneurial, and able to anticipate and respond to market trends with innovative approaches and services. They will pursue and develop new business and revenue streams to grow and sustain HRiA’s grantmaking services. The Vice President will contribute to the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams at HRiA. They will also work with staff across the organization to sustain or expand existing programs and develop new programs and services to enhance program impact and diversify the organization’s portfolio. The Vice President reports to the President. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Vice President position consists of four main responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Work with senior leadership to develop and implement organizational vision, goals, objectives, and metrics.
  • Lead and shape a vision for grantmaking services that aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee and provide guidance to Managing Directors and other senior staff to ensure effective management of projects, clients, teams, and stakeholders.
  • Hire, supervise, and mentor staff and ensure their professional development.
  • Set annual programmatic and financial goals and manage portfolio and project budgets.

Program/Project Work

  • Lead, manage, and/or contribute to projects by contributing subject matter and/or technical expertise to projects and teams.
  • Provide exceptional client management services to current and potential clients.
  • Oversee the use of state-of-the-art grantmaking systems and cost-effective technology for grant application, review, and monitoring processes.
  • Monitor compliance with all applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Work with staff to oversee and manage disbursement of grant awards.
  • Develop and implement processes to assess impact of work.

Business Development

  • Collaborate with the President/CEO, Vice Presidents, and other senior staff to conceptualize and secure large multi-year contracts and funding to sustain and grow the grantmaking portfolio of the organization.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing clients including foundations, law firms, bank trust departments, public agencies, and hospitals/health systems.
  • Develop new relationships with other clients to grow the community health grantmaking portfolio and work with staff to expand the impact of our biomedical research grantmaking services.
  • Write proposals and lead proposal development processes for relevant opportunities and contribute to other writing teams where appropriate.
  • Support senior and junior staff members’ new business development efforts.

Thought Leadership

  • Establish and implement a strategic vision for the grantmaking portfolio and contribute to the vision and management of the overall organization.
  • Become a trusted and informed resource to staff and clients.
  • Author and contribute to publications (e.g., journal manuscripts, practice briefs, etc.) and present at national/regional conferences.
  • Develop and provide content for website, newsletter, and/or other methods of marketing HRiA’s work and impact.


This role requires the presence, credibility, and confidence to lead in thought and action, along with the skills to listen objectively and collaborate effectively with a broad range of staff and stakeholders. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:


  • An advanced degree in business administration, public health, or medicine, or a relevant, related field with a solid understanding of philanthropy.
  •  A minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience in positions of progressive senior leadership, preferably in philanthropy and health.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends, challenges, and best practices in health equity, philanthropy, public health, and/or biomedical research.
  • Extensive successful experience in donor cultivation, funder/client relations, and new business development.
  • Experience working with and managing diverse clients and meeting or exceeding their expectations in quality and performance.
  • A proven track record in writing and securing large grants/contracts from a diverse portfolio of funders (e.g., philanthropy, corporations, federal/state agencies, health care institutions, and non-profit organizations).
  • Solid management experience and demonstrated success in developing, leading, and managing large national multi-year projects and high performing teams.
  • Experience in evaluating grant programs.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
