Action Alert! Advocate for Healthy Food Access in the State Budget

Take Action Now!to support the Mass Food Trust Program and SNAP Access! (5)

On April 10, 2017, the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee released their proposal for the FY18 state budget without funding for two important issues that address healthy food access and affordability: the Massachusetts Food Trust and the SNAP Gap. As planned, Representative Donahue and Representative Livingstone have each filed amendments to the budget which would dedicate $100,000 for the operating costs of the Massachusetts Food Trust, and would direct the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to allow MassHealth applicants and recipients to file a SNAP application at the same time they apply or get a renewal of their MassHealth benefits.

We are now in a critical window to build support for the Massachusetts Food Trust and SNAP Gap budget amendments in the House, and we need YOUR help get them adopted.

Sample Email Script

Dear [Your Representative’s Name]:

My name is [Your Name]. I am a constituent from [Your Town]. –OR— I work for [Your Organization] and we serve many residents in the Representative’s district. I am writing to ask you to please co-sponsor Amendment #35 and #31 to support the implementation of the Massachusetts Food Trust program, and to close the SNAP Gap and create a common application portal.

It’s important that we get the Massachusetts Food Trust amendment included because these funds help support a staff person to administer and implement the program.  In addition to supporting the increased healthy food access of the Massachusetts Food Trust program, we must also address the issue of affordability by including the SNAP Gap amendment. There are over 680,000 Massachusetts residents likely eligible for SNAP, but aren’t receiving benefits, this amendment will help to close that gap.  The [Massachusetts Food Trust/closing the SNAP Gap] is important to me/my community because [say in a few sentences why you care about the MA Food Trust/SNAP and how they benefit your community.]

I hope I can count on your support. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Thank you very much for your time.
