Massachusetts Public Health Association Public Statement

March 17, 2017

The Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Public Health Association (MPHA) announced today the upcoming departure of Executive Director, Rebekah Gewirtz. Rebekah has served as MPHA’s strong executive director for the past three years and has led the organization’s success over that time.  “We are sad to see Rebekah leave but understand that she is going on to lead the organization where she worked tirelessly for nearly nine years, the National Association of Social Workers, MA Chapter,” said MPHA Board President, Jessica Collins. Rebekah’s last day with MPHA will be April 14, 2017.

During Rebekah’s tenure, MPHA was selected through a competitive process as a social innovator with the Social Innovation Forum. She also led successful efforts to expand and increase the MPHA membership program. She has been an important asset to MPHA’s ambitious policy agenda, providing her strategic expertise on key legislative priorities such as the Food Trust and the Prevention and Wellness Trust Fund. Most importantly, Rebekah’s commitment to social justice and addressing the root causes of health inequities has amplified MPHA’s vision and made the organization’s work even more impactful for the people of the Commonwealth.

MPHA’s board is happy to announce that our board vice president, Jodie Silverman, will be stepping in as full-time Interim Executive Director effective April 17th. Jodie will be working with Rebekah over the next several weeks to ensure a smooth transition. Jodie is a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in public health, social justice and related issues, in both the public and nonprofit sectors. She has strong leadership experience, and has set key agendas, raised funds, and led teams to great success.

“MPHA remains solidly grounded with staff, board teams and a strong and seamless transition from Rebekah to Jodie,” said Collins.

Please join us in thanking Rebekah for her wonderful service to MPHA and in welcoming Jodie Silverman as our interim leader.
