Let’s get the Food Trust over the finish line!

Last week the legislature passed the FY17 state budget with $100,000 included for operating expenses of the Massachusetts Food Trust!  This is a huge win, especially in a very challenging budget year. MPHA, along with many key partners, has led the effort to fund the Massachusetts Food Trust over the past four years. Although this is a major step toward victory, the effort is not yet over.  Governor Baker has until July 11th to veto or reduce any line item in the budget. In order to ensure this funding remains in the final budget, we need you to reach out to Governor Baker and express your support for this important program.

To help you in your advocacy we’ve included a sample message below for you to personalize and send to the Governor.  You can also ask others to take action by using the sample social media posts below.

The Massachusetts Food Trust Program will provide loans, grants, and technical assistance to support new and expanded healthy food retailers and local food enterprises in low and moderate income communities. The results of the program will be increased access to healthy, affordable food and quality jobs in low and moderate income communities.

We would not have gotten this far without your strong and sustained advocacy – and we can’t stop now. Please contact the Governor today and express your support for the Massachusetts Food Trust.

Dear Governor Baker,

I am writing to strongly encourage you to approve $100,000 in funding for the operating costs of the Massachusetts Food Trust included in the FY2017 Conference Committee budget within the Massachusetts Office of Business Development (7007-0300). The Massachusetts Food Trust will support new and expanded healthy food retailers and local food enterprises in low and moderate income communities, and has the ability to leverage significant private and federal dollars. This $100,000 investment will help to launch this important program, leverage significant private investment, improve health, and create jobs across the Commonwealth.
