House Passes Bill Creating Office of Health Equity

On, January 25, 2016, An Act to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in the Commonwealth, sponsored by Representative Jeffrey Sanchez and Representative Byron Rushing, was reported favorably by the House Ways and Means Committee and on January 27, 2016 was passed by the House. It now moves onto the Senate for consideration.

MPHA has long been an advocate for the bill which will create an Office of Health Equity within the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). The Office of Health Equity will create an annual plan for the elimination of health disparities in Massachusetts and will work with other state agencies, including agencies dealing with housing, transportation, public safety and labor, on disparities reduction initiatives to address the social factors that influence health inequities.
