Momentum has been building behind our call to Governor Baker to release funds for the Massachusetts Food Trust Program to increase access to healthy foods and jobs in low and moderate income communities. Last week, 26 economic development leaders sent a letter to Governor Baker calling on him to release the $2 million in bond funds that the legislature allocated to the program in 2014. The letter argues that the Food Trust Program is a way to drive economic development, to improve health and wellness, and to alleviate poverty across the Commonwealth. The letter’s signers includes chambers of commerce, business associations, community development corporations, community development financial institutions, and other leaders representing every region of the state. In addition, 15 legislators – including the House and Senate chairs of the Economic Development Committee – also sent a letter to the Governor calling for the release of funds authorized to implement the Food Trust Program.
