On September 9, 2015, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy launched a campaign that promotes physical activity through walking and promotes the creation of built environments that encourage walking. The U.S. Surgeon General announced that the campaign, called Step it Up!, is “a call to action to promote walking and walkable communities.” The Surgeon General gave three reasons why the Step it Up! campaign is important for improving public health: 1. it is preventative, focusing on optimal health before disease occurs; 2. walking is applicable to the health of people all ages and stages of life; and 3. it recognizes the need for access to open spaces and places that make it easy to walk or wheelchair roll whether in urban, suburban and rural environments.
