Brief Summary of Position:

A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Region I office within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Region I encompasses the six New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The selected participant will focus on public health projects assigned to the Region by the Assistant Secretary for Health. These currently include: Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC); the Tobacco-Free College Campus Initiative (TFCCI); and Million Hearts (MH).

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Region I OASH Regional Health Administrator and staff, specific activities may include:

  • Provide support to DHHS/OASH staff with assessment and implementation of various projects related to prevention of chronic disease and promotion of wellness, including LMCTC, TFCCI and MH.
  • Research, collect, and analyze information and resources to promote advancement of these DHHS/OASH initiatives.
  • Write and edit talking points, fact sheets, newsletter articles and blog posts to promote these initiatives.
  • Provide technical assistance to New England stakeholders in LMCTC, TFCCI and MH, through identification of resources and best practices.
  • Draft effective messaging for partners using a variety of techniques, including email, conference calls, webinars and social media.
  • Track and summarize information related to LMCTC, TFCCI and MH, including drafting progress reports for submission to national DHHS/OASH officials.

Through this fellowship, the selected participant will learn to: identify and disseminate effective recruitment and technical assistance strategies for engaging local government in DHHS efforts to address childhood obesity and prevent heart attacks and strokes; identify and disseminate effective implementation and technical assistance strategies for engaging academic institutions in DHHS efforts to implement tobacco-free campuses; and share lessons learned with federal and non-federal entities interested in engaging local elected officials, academic institutions and other stakeholders for all projects.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DHHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DHHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with education level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. A stipend supplement will be provided to help cover the cost of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at OASH in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. Participants do not become employees of DHHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in public health or a related field received within the last five years.
    • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree received within the last five years are also encourages to apply, provided they have relevant public health academic or work experience in addition to the degree.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or a foreign national who has resided in the U.S. for a minimum of three years.
