Dr. Monica Bharel Named Next Public Health Commissioner

Governor-elect Charlie Baker recently named Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program‘s chief medical officer Dr. Monica Bharel as leader of the state’s Department of Public Health.  In this role Dr. Bharel will oversee programs addressing all areas of public health – from violence prevention to infectious disease control to nutrition, physical activity, and obesity. She will also manage more than 3,000 employees and a $540 million budget.

Colleagues highlight Dr. Bharel’s unwavering commitment to public health and unique ability to understand the value of coordinating systems in public health to effectively achieve better health outcomes. MPHA congratulates Dr. Bharel on her appointment and looks forward to a close collaboration for a healthier and more equitable Commonwealth.
