Governor-elect Charlie Baker has named Marylou Sudders as the state’s new Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sudders is the first woman to be appointed to the new Cabinet and will lead the state government’s largest executive agency, which includes 16 state departments with a total budget of nearly $20 billion. Ms. Sudders has a long history of working in the health sector, most recently as the state’s mental health commissioner and as head of Boston College’s health and mental health graduate program. In her new role, she will oversee the Department of Public Health, the continued implementation of the Affordable Care Act and state cost containment initiatives, and child welfare efforts. MPHA looks forward to working with Secretary Sudders in the coming years to support a strong public health system and to advance health equity.
