We are continuing to build momentum on Healthy Food Financing legislation. Over the last several weeks, working with partners in every corner of the state, we have collected more than 1,200 postcards for Representatives and Senators from constituents calling for action to improve access to healthy food. In recent weeks, we’ve delivered these to the State House to 138 Representatives (out of 160) and 39 Senators (out of 40).
Many other MPHA members and partners have put in calls and emails to their elected leaders, as well as signed an online petition.
We’ve definitely got their attention! Our latest effort to include the program in the Senate’s economic development bill was not considered. However, as a result of all the support that has been generated, we’ve received encouraging signs that a standalone bill may soon be on the move.
Also, be sure to check out the Boston Globe’s recent coverage of progress being made to improve grocery access in Brockton. MPHA’s Rebekah Gewirtz is quoted in the article talking about the injustice of food deserts.
