Brief position summary: African Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities, Inc. (AFCAMP) http://www.afcamp.org/ is a dynamic, grassroots community-based 501(c) 3 organization located in Hartford, CT. Founded in 1999 by community activist Merva Jackson and a group of community parent organizers, AFCAMP quickly established itself as a go-to resource for parents of children with disabilities.
AFCAMP informs, trains and supports parents raising children with disabilities for the purpose of improving their children’s education and quality of life. Through aggressive parent organizing, paired with advocacy and education, AFCAMP works along-side and in partnership with agencies such as the Connecticut Council on Disabilities, The Center for Children’s Advocacy, The Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance and others to shape policy, inform key decision makers and gain access for parents of children with disabilities.
The agency is seeking a passionate, experienced, politically-savvy and seasoned leader to direct the organization. The executive director is responsible for oversight of all operations to achieve the organization’s mission and goals and is accountable to an 11-member board of directors, of whom 51 percent are parents of children with disabilities and community members. The executive director will provide essential leadership to guide operational and programmatic expansion and help ensure focus and direction during this transition period.
